Escape the Hustle & Bustle of Sydney for the Weekend
Winter weekends in Sydney can go one of two ways. You stay, and wish you'd left. Or you head up to the Central Coast and wonder why you don't do it every June.
Ettalong Beach is 90 minutes north of the city on the Gosford Peninsula. No long drive, no crowds, no summer price tags. The waterfront is quiet, the cafes are good, the national parks are right there, and the whale migration runs from May through November. It's the kind of place that rewards people who show up out of season, and a growing number of Sydneysiders have figured that out.
Getting There
Drive up via the M1 and you're in Ettalong in about 90 minutes from the CBD. Alternatively, take the train from Central to Woy Woy in about an hour and 45 minutes, then a short taxi or bus to Ettalong. Or make the journey part of the getaway and catch the Palm Beach Ferry across Pittwater and Broken Bay to Ettalong Wharf. Thirty minutes on the water beats an hour in traffic every time.
What Winter Looks Like in Ettalong
Ettalong's setting is the thing that makes it work in winter. The beach faces Broken Bay rather than the open ocean, so the water stays calm and the foreshore stays beautiful even when the weather is cooler. The winters here are mild compared to inland NSW, and on a clear winter weekend day, there are few better places to be than walking the Esplanade with a coffee from Lords of Pour, watching kayakers cross the bay.
The winter light on the Central Coast is genuinely beautiful. Long golden mornings, still water, the islands and headlands of Broken Bay lit up in the afternoon. It photographs brilliantly, which explains why you're starting to see a lot more Central Coast content on people's feeds in winter.
The Itinerary Writes Itself
Saturday morning: Walk to the Galleria Markets on Ocean View Road. They're indoors, open every Saturday, and home to over 50 stalls covering handmade goods, food, fashion, art, homewares and more. Follow it with brunch at Box on the Water or Coast 175, both solid options for a waterfront morning meal. Pick up pastries from Bremen Patisserie for the road.
Saturday afternoon: Head into Bouddi National Park for a section of the Bouddi Coastal Walk, or do the shorter Box Head Lookout track for a 30-minute return walk with knockout views across Broken Bay to West Head and beyond. In whale season (May to November), bring binoculars. From Gerrin Point Lookout, you can watch humpbacks migrate offshore without needing to book a tour.
Saturday evening: Dinner at Ettalong Diggers right on the foreshore. Riley's Brasserie handles the sit-down meals, or grab something more casual at the bars. Live entertainment most weekends. After dinner, Cinema Paradiso at the Galleria is a genuinely quirky option, with six theatres each styled differently. It's nothing like a shopping centre cinema, and that's the whole point.
Sunday morning: Hire bikes from Ride Ettalong and ride to Woy Woy Fishermen's Wharf for fish and chips by the water. Or catch the morning ferry to Palm Beach for coffee and a walk on the Northern Beaches before heading home refreshed and not exhausted.
Things to Do Near Ettalong Beach in Winter
The Ettalong Beach area punches well above its weight for a long weekend. You could fill three days without repeating yourself. Here are some of the highlights.
Day Trips Worth Building Your Weekend Around
Pearl Beach - One of the most secluded beaches on the Central Coast, tucked between Bouddi and Brisbane Water National Parks. No shops, no crowds, just a beautiful curved beach. Walk there from Patonga via the national park track if you want a proper morning out.

Patonga - A tiny village accessible by ferry from Palm Beach or a short drive. The Boathouse does great breakfast and seafood. There's very little else there, and that's exactly the point.
Terrigal - 30 minutes up the coast for a livelier scene. Walk The Skillion for clifftop ocean views and some of the best whale watching on the Coast, then wind down along the esplanade for lunch.
Hardys Bay - Waterfront cafes, a relaxed pace and a beautiful outlook across Killcare. Perfect for a slow lunch stop.
